Description
Alugbati, also known as basella/vine spinach/malabar spinach is a vine with dark green heart-shaped leaves. It tastes very similar to spinach. The Rubra variety is more common in the Philippines and it is said to contain a higher amount of anti-oxidant compared to the alba variety.
It is rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants and low in calories. It is high in vitamin A, vitamin C, iron, folate, potassium, manganese, calcium, magnesium and copper. It is one of the superfoods on the planet because it is packed with essential vitamins and minerals.
Alugbati is commonly mixed with Filipino vegetable dishes such as bulanglang but it can also be used with any dish that needs leafy vegetables.
